The Isle of Bute

Sailing around the Isle of Bute offers a wealth of scenery and sheltered anchorages. The principal harbour at Rothesay provides secure moorings and anchoring options, making it an ideal base to explore the island.

A circumnavigation of Bute reveals numerous small islands teeming with wildlife. From seals and seabirds to porpoises. Whether a day sail or sunset cruise (at the right time of year!), the island’s tree-lined shores and tranquil waters make for an unforgettable passage.

On land, take time to enjoy Rothesay’s Victorian charm; whether the historic castle, the grand Mount Stuart Estate, Bute Museum, or even the beautifully preserved Victorian toilets along the promenade. The island combines gentle, sandy beaches on the east coast with a wilder, more rugged landscape to the west.

The Kyles of Bute

The Kyles of Bute form a narrow, winding sea passage between Bute and the Cowal Peninsula, renowned for its spectacular scenery of wooded slopes and rocky headlands. These mostly sheltered waters make for relaxed sailing, with just enough tidal flow and shifting winds to keep things interesting.

Designated a National Scenic Area, the Kyles are ideal for sailing, kayaking, hiking, and wildlife spotting. Take time to explore the quieter bays off the main channel which are perfect for peaceful anchoring and soaking in the views.
